The Unicorn in Captivity (from The Unicorn Tapestries) - Metropolitan Museum of Art - Cloisters

I recently visited the Cloisters in New York City for the first time and was overwhelmed by The Unicorn Tapestries (as is everyone else because that is why people go).

But because I'm me, I became fixated on the plants.  There must be wallpaper inspired by this.  Has anyone found it (not counting the wallpaper with repeating unicorns)?

unicorn_calendula_detail_450.jpg

Each flowering plant is an individual sprig, different from its neighbor.  The plants are stacked with minimal depth. Although this was made in 1500-ish, I am confident that a wallpaper interpretation would be timeless.

In my dreams I would have a powder room covered with the stuff so you walked in and were accosted with it.

And the Tyrant Train keeps chuggin'

This is now my fifth post about the FX show Tyrant, and I already know it won't be my last.  Ridiculous!  I should just rename this blog Titillating Tyrant and devote the whole things to screen shots and fan fiction.

Ex: Once upon a time two hot young Americans sat in in front of an elaborately tiled wall.....

I just finished episode ten and there were two new sets that need to be mentioned.

Tyrant: Season 1, Episode 10 - All marble bathroom.  This is a room fit for two ignorant american princesses.

The Gorgeous/Awful Week

I just watched The Longest Week, and it was such beautiful trash.  I cannot recommend it, unless want to make your eyes happy and your brain hurt.

The story is about wealthy attractive aimless Manhattan-its who do not understand the value of a dollar.  Although the plot centers around Jason Bateman getting disinherited, the filmmaker is much more concerned with demonstrating that french culture is cool and he is a big fan of Wes Anderson.

This film is so comically out of touch, that it even romanticizes smoking cigarettes (something that no film has been able to get away with in a decade).

That being said, let me reiterate that every set and every shot is beautiful.  Bateman lives in his family's fancy hotel.  Right off the bat, I can see that we love the same things.

Prominent pictures of french royalty:

The running design element that stood out for me was the use of textured white walls through out the film.

In the Napoleon room the walls have engaged columns and extensive molding details.

Most of the other spaces have white painted brick walls or white painted paneling.

More Tyranny

Tyrant: Season 1 - Meeting room in the palace

Tyrant has done it again!  I thought I was done sharing pictures from the FX show, but I'm not because any set that pulls off large scale gold patterned wallpaper needs to be acknowledged.

Most Beautiful Room I Didn't See

fouquet-storefront-Kala-Court.jpg

When I lived in Paris (that sounded snooty), I made a point to try to  visit every museum I possibly could.  So how did I miss this!!!

Georges Fouquet's jewelry shop was designed in 1901 by Alphonse Mucha and was located at 6 rue Royale.  It was later moved to the Musée Carnavalet

I was going to try to point out some of the design elements, but it turned into a list of every component of the room.  Just look at the peacocks!  And the stained glass!  And the tiled floor!  And the...everything.

fouquet-women-Kala-Court.jpg

Mucha is an Art Nouveau kingpin, but he is better known for his work in advertisements.  You might be familiar with some of these posters:

Fouquet and Mucha also collaborated on some spectacular jewelry:

The Wallpaper is Back

A while back, I wrote about the wallpaper in Mad Men vs. The Americans.  The thesis was that cutting edge wallpaper in the 60's, would become mass produced by the 80's and used in suburban homes.

Mad Men - 1960's

Mad Men - 1960's

The Americans - 1980's

The Americans - 1980's

Now there is another data point:

The Skeleton Twins - Gay bar on Dyke Night

The Skeleton Twins - Gay bar on Dyke Night

The trailer for The Skeleton Twins was just released and The Americans's wallpaper is featured in a bar set.  This would fit with the thesis because this bar probably put this wallpaper up in the 80's and has spent the next 30 years regretting it.

Jazzing things up with tape

mtCasa-11-500x286.jpg
mtCasa-8-500x286.jpg

It is a common occurrence for a friend of mine to move into an apartment with an unattractive kitchen/bathroom/etc.  They ask me how they can spice things up, and I throw a bunch of suggestions at them: paint/collage/drape/vinyl/etc.  More often than not, they end up learning to live with the eyesore because they are not ready to put in the work/money to try and solve the problem.

Well, who ever asks me next is in luck, because I am going to suggest washi (after reading about it on Design Sponge) .  It seems like a much more user friendly alternative to vinyl, and a much easier solution than painting.  I am not sure if it ends up being cheap or pricey.  I guess it depends on the project.

mtCasa-3-500x286.jpg
Emma kitchen.jpg

I painted this wall in my dining room the old fashioned way, but I suppose I could have achieved a similar effect from using this tape.

Speaking of my dining room, I should really write a post about how to paint stripes on a wall.  All in good time.

Tile-o-Rama

I was reading Remodelista, when I stumbled on an article all about patchwork tile.  First of all, it's AWESOME!

These kitchens immediately made me think of the kitchen set from The New Normal, which was going for a classic California Spanish Colonial feel.

And just because they are so pretty, here are more pictures of tile:

Matte Black Magic

When shiny black is used in decor, you run the risk of coming off as goth or glam or too modern or american psycho.  But the same doesn't go for matte black.  When that shiny surface is stripped away, you are left with something warm and velvety.

Check out how it is used on doors, walls, furniture, tile, hardware...Sky's the limit!

Chinoiserie Chic wrote an article about the Manhattan home of fashion designer Elizabeth McKay.

Her daughter's room jumped out at me because there is a green herringbone pattern (which I like) applied to the walls, windows, bed, shelves.....and who knows what else.  It's hard to get a sense of the room overall.

Sherlock at the Wedding

Shirlock.JPG

Sherlock (Season 1, Episode 2) takes place at John Watson's wedding.  The reception hall is a bright sunny yellow with a painted mural of vines and birds all around.

When the mural is investigated closer, I like it a little less.  It is more contemporary than I expected, but as a space it is stunning.

The venue reminded me of this image that has been hanging out on my Pinterest page for years.

A magical realm on the other side of the wall

Scarface (1983)

Scarface (1983)

When I think of a wall covered in a large photograph, my mind immediately goes to Scarface...but is that such a bad thing?  Yes, it was meant to be over the top and tacky, but it is still freakin' awesome.

There is just something magical about being able to walk over base moldings into a forest, onto a beach, or into a piece of art.

The company Wallpapered let's you select or design your wall art, put in the dimensions of your wall, and receive your art in the mail.  Or there is Pixers, which does the same thing.  I am sure a google will turn up many more options.

The picture to the left led me to Steve's Wallpaper and Blinds.  The site looks budget to the max, so it makes sense they would have some really affordable wall murals for sale.  There are a bunch that are less than $100.

Malachite: Just putting it in writing

0366602001287174803.jpg

I am not the first person to say MALACHITE IS AMAZING, and I won't be the last.......because it's amazing.

Malachite is a green mineral, often banded in appearance.  This patter has been reproduced in fabric, wallpaper, DYI hand painting, vinyl, and anything else you can think off.  The bold color is unmistakably decadent  and the application of this pattern produces out of this world results.

I think this room is a little all-over-the-place, but I felt like I needed to include it because of the ceiling.  Not only is it hand painted malachite, but I am all about patterned ceilings in general.

Calling it: Brushstrokes

Ross Cassidy

Ross Cassidy

One of the stand out rooms in the second season of Million Dollar Decorators (a.k.a. best show ever made for planet earth), was the bedroom and sitting room for Amber Valetta.  The room was designed by Ross Cassidy, the right hand man at JAM.

It's way too pink for my taste but the brushstroke ceiling is fabulous.  It makes the room.  I just wish I could have found a better picture of it.

I didn't know this was a trend until I saw a post on Chinoiserie Chic which featured burshstroke walls.

I adore this Kelly Wearstler room.  But maybe I'm biased because I think I could live the rest of my life in only Kelly Wearstler rooms and be happy.

Masters Of Sex - Season 1, Episode 3: Upstairs room in a 1950's whore house

I really appreciate the wallpaper choice in this brothel.  I like that they broke the wall up into two parts, the main wall and a thin upper section.  They chose a busy ornate pattern for the main wall, and a simple geometric patter for the upper band.  It works for me.
