A show I love, and a bed I love, unite!

I have had my eye on the Supra Bed from CB2 for quite a while.  I have always loved its low profile, elegant caning, and cozy curves.  I was so happy to see it used in the love nest on The Affair.

Lucite for babies

I just stumbled on this piece of perfection.  It's the Vetro Crib by Nurseryworks, and it goes for $3950.  I never imagined they made things this lovely for babies.  Then I started googling "lucite crib" and there were more!

Also, the internet is saying that Beyonce's baby is in a lucite cribe, and I expected nothing less from a woman of such taste.

Sofas for Cat People (The best kind of people)

I have two cats, and they are the loves of my life, but they are murder on sofas.  The sides and back of sofas are perfect scratching posts, so cats claw them to shreds.  I have seen cat owners try to cover their sofas in Saran wrap, or other such eye sores, but it is lose-lose.

I was going through a sofa every two year, and assumed my life would be full of disposable craigslist mediocrity, until I found this campaign style sofa.

My dream sofa.  Each cushion is slowly being replaced by a leather one as my cats pee on them.

The magic of this sofa, is that all the sides are boxed in.  There is nothing for my cats to scratch.  Yes, they do a little damage here and there (animals!) but as the cushions wear out, I can replace them without tossing the whole couch.

Boy style sofas can be found in many different styles:

The Affair: Season 1, Episode 5 - Montauk home of a lady folk musician.

I have had my eye on IKEA's Vittsjo shelves for years, but have yet to find a reason to purchase them.  This double wide unit costs $80, and the series comes in so many other shapes and sizes.

The scale and style of this piece is just perfect.  It is contemporary without going out of style, and its proportions allow it to showcase a variety of objects.  Use it for books, kitchenware, etc.  Pack it tight, or leave a single bowl on a glass shelf.

IKEA hackers have manipulated this pieces with great results.

Spray paint the black metal for a pop of color:

Or replace the glass shelves with stained wood:

This one is a hoot.  Someone painted the shelves gold, and added a hardware to the corners to make it extra fancy:

Just Google "Vittsjo Hack" and you will find so many more images of people getting creative.

What's up, Watson?

Elementary: Season 3, Episode 1 - Jane Watson's new bachelorette pad.

Season 3 of Elementary opens with Watson living in a sweet new apartment, so she can keep Sherlock out of her personal life.

She seems like she has her life together, so what is going on with the sofa!?  I know the sofa must be expensive, but I do not understand it.  It seems like the arm piece is a dash too small, so it doesn't fit snugly to the back or line up flush with the front.  Or maybe this is a part of sectional that lost a limb.

What ever is going on, I will keep you abreast of any breaking news.

Swinging on the Bad Side

Swinging with the Finkels - The Chesterfield sofa of my dreams

Before I watched the film Swinging with the Finkels, I checked Rotten Tomatoes, only to find it was given a 0%.  I decided, what the hell, and watched it anyway.  This was the right choice because I am the target audience for wooden, corporate-looking, rom-coms.  I found this movie "watchable".

In the Finkel's beautiful open plan living room, they break up the space with black Middle Easter screens draped with rich warm fabric.  It's fabulous.

And they have giant wall art of themselves so they can conveniently get into fights in front of it.  You see this a fair amount in sets, but 90% of the time, the art is Andy Warhol-esque (example below).

I watched the first episode of the new sitcom, Mulaney, last night, and it seems promising.  The highlight was Elliott Gould's $80/month apartment (oh magical rent control).  It is decorated in a masculine, layered, mid-century style that I can really get behind.

Chasing Life: Season 1, Episode 4 - Home Beacon Hill townhouse

This gorgeous chair popped up in the show Chasing Life.  I have been on a real Windsor kick as of late.  I seem to like them in a dark finish with very simple lines, and no turned wood.  There is something so timeless and elegant about them.

What key works would help me find this specific chair (or something close)?  Suggestions?

Wait! That's my chair!

I was doing a google image search for "famous dining chairs" (because that's what I do), and the very first image was of my dining room chair...in worse condition and with a pretty unflattering seat fabric.

But nonetheless....What!

The chair image led me to a blog, and blog showed me a picture of my chair on Mad Men.

Clearly this is a woman after my heart.

The screen grab is from an episode where Don goes to California (whaaa!) and fixes a chair for an old friend (aka the real wife of the real Don Draper)

More sets with beautiful/uncomfortable Bertoias

I while back I wrote a post about how affordable and attractive Bertoia chairs are, but they are brutal on the thighs.

The below picture was from a TV show I worked on called Making Mr Right on Vh1.  I never saw an episode of the show, but check out those Bertoias in the background.  The seats are welded on to i-beams and turned into benches.  Still massively uncomfortable.

I started watching the MTV show Finding Carter, and like all sets for teens, the kid's hang out spot is extremely colorful, and full of snacks.

Their playhouse/art studio is inside shipping containers.  I like the use of a rug on the wall to soften the space, even though I have never cared for the rug they chose.

Here is a shot of the club house exterior at night:

Doubling Down

One of my favorite blogs, Chinoiserie Chic, lead my to a design epiphany.

I never think to use multiple side tables in place of a coffee table!

I know this is an extremely minor epiphany.

Forget about side tables!  Those shingles are amazing!

And obviously this concept works out side of the Chinoiserie realm.

Jazzing things up with tape

mtCasa-11-500x286.jpg
mtCasa-8-500x286.jpg

It is a common occurrence for a friend of mine to move into an apartment with an unattractive kitchen/bathroom/etc.  They ask me how they can spice things up, and I throw a bunch of suggestions at them: paint/collage/drape/vinyl/etc.  More often than not, they end up learning to live with the eyesore because they are not ready to put in the work/money to try and solve the problem.

Well, who ever asks me next is in luck, because I am going to suggest washi (after reading about it on Design Sponge) .  It seems like a much more user friendly alternative to vinyl, and a much easier solution than painting.  I am not sure if it ends up being cheap or pricey.  I guess it depends on the project.

I painted this wall in my dining room the old fashioned way, but I suppose I could have achieved a similar effect from using this tape.

Speaking of my dining room, I should really write a post about how to paint stripes on a wall.  All in good time.

Mad Men Called

I enjoyed watching the phone call between Don and Megan from Season 7, Episode 7 of Mad Men because it is so obvious that THEY ARE IN DIFFERENT PLACES!

Mad Men: Season 7, Episode 7

Mad Men: Season 7, Episode 7

Don is in a ridged, dark, conventional world with heavy drapes and dark wood.  The chair he sits in reminds me of the chair in House of Cards.  It is very traditional, but with unexpected whimsical woodwork.

Megan, on the other hand, is in sunny Los Angeles (a city very dear to me).  She is sitting in a cord chair in the sunshine, surrounded by west coast potted plants and a California color pallet.  Honestly, things haven't changed too much here. This is what it looks like.

Antique Modern Furniture

rune_bed.jpg

I stumbled upon this incredible bed made by Hive Mind Design in Brooklyn.

It got me thinking about this mash-up trend in contemporary furniture design where classically antique elements are fused with clean modern lines and materials.

Dessouschic Tables By Noé Duchaufour Lawrance

Dessouschic Tables By Noé Duchaufour Lawrance

The most ubiquitous examples of this is the Louis Ghost Chair and the Bourgie Table Lamp.  Both are clean and modern, but have obvious classical elements.

And you see them everywhere!  I am particularly bitter about this because I have been wanting a ghost chair for ages and I missed the "cool" window.

Windsor Benches

In my post about Matte Black, I posted this picture of a Windsor Bench:

3dd78659189ec2b2aa14c4b6aaa88b04 (1).jpg

There is something about this image that keeps pulling me back.  It's the matte black, and the large art, and that gosh darn bench.  It's not my style at all, but I want one.

O&G Studio sells this bench, but there isn't a price on the website, which means it's a million dollars.

Capture.JPG

I was about to write that I like the O&G bench because of it's low flat back, but then I found this one (which is probably also a million dollars) by Peter Kramer:

700_Large-Windsor-Bench.jpg
DoubleBowbackWindsor--84K.jpg

My new conclusion is that it's the simplicity and the color of all three of these benches that makes them so lovely.

When the same bench is in a pale oak, or has too many turned spokes, it begins to feel like it belongs in a 90's entryway.  Case in point:

Matte Black Magic

When shiny black is used in decor, you run the risk of coming off as goth or glam or too modern or american psycho.  But the same doesn't go for matte black.  When that shiny surface is stripped away, you are left with something warm and velvety.

Check out how it is used on doors, walls, furniture, tile, hardware...Sky's the limit!
