I did a little research and learned that in the late 80's my mom decided to splurge on four hand crafted Thomas Moser dining chairs.  At the time they were about $600 a pop (now they are $1075).  Clearly my mom didn't tell my dad how much they were until after the fact because THAT IS SO MUCH MONEY!

The four Moser chairs are still around our dining room table, and in pretty near perfect condition.

In one of the first few episodes of The Blacklist, a psycho killer breaks into the home of our heroine and holds her husband hostage in their dining room.  But of course, I was distracted by the chair behind her head.  It looked so much like the ones my parents have (but not the same).

My super 80's mom should be telling my sister to get off that chair!

This picture of me shows not just Thomas Moser chairs, but also a Thonet nock-off rocking chair.  Double whammy!

When I visited the MAK design museum in Vienna a few weeks back, I was struck by the exhibition design choice for their Thonet furniture.  Since writing a post about Thonet cafe chairs, I knew I would have to see some in person before I left the city.

The chairs are lined up behind white screens so their shadows create a graphic hallway.  Displaying them in this way accentuates their simplicity and lines.

Fun fact: In 1859, Thonet produced Chair No. 14.  Fifty million of these chairs were produced through 1930.

The cafe chairs became ubiquitous, and they began to pop up in paintings of the time.  Below is a painting of the interior of the Moulin Rouge by Toulouse-Lautrec.  The chair is clearly featured.

I love the cafe chairs that popped up in Episode 3 of Orange is the New Black.  It's a Netflix show about a woman who has to go to prison, so I didn't thinker there would much to write about, but clearly I was wrong.

Not as big a fan of the table, but I liked that they paired the chairs with something slick and contrasting.

I think of Michael Thonet as the godfather of the cafe/bistro chair.  He specialized in bent wood furniture, and began producing pieces in the 1830s.
